Frequently Asked Questions

Should I have Clinical Psychotherapy/ Counselling, or Life Coaching?

Are you looking for psychotherapy/ counselling therapy in Exeter, UK, or online?

Did you know that depending on the nature of your problem, Life Coaching may actually be a better fit?

I’m often asked to explain the difference between clinical psychotherapy and life coaching.

While not every therapist or coach’s framework will be the same, the main difference is the seriousness of the presenting issue.

Clinical Psychotherapy is suitable for people suffering to cope with a complex issue that necessitates a specialised, trained healthcare professional: therapy for issues such as PTSD, Trauma, Addiction/Substance Abuse, Eating Disorders, Suicidal thoughts, Major Depressive Disorder, and Personality Disorders would be out of the scope of what a Life Coach would offer.

Primarily clients see a Clinical Psychologist if they are seeking assistance with healing trauma, overcoming abuse, treating addiction, or treating mental illness. The ICF Code of Ethics includes imperatives for referring clients to other support professionals as needed; to that end, should a potential client present with these types of clinical issues, as a matter of professional integrity I will signpost them to relevant trained healthcare professionals to ensure they get the support they need.

Life coaching, however, is about helping clients to bring awareness to current belief systems so that they can decide intentionally how they want to live.  Life coaches help clients to identify negative thought patterns and beliefs that are keeping them stuck, in order to create an action plan to achieve desired results. A masterful life coach enables the client to heal the past, re-program their mindset to eliminate blocks, and let go of unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour so that they can radically transform their lives. Armed with a new mindset and loads of powerful tools, the client is able to take empowered control of their life so that they can thrive rather than merely survive.

Life coaches meet clients where they are: in the present. Life coaching doesn’t focus obsessively on the past, but rather seeks to understand the past in order to better understand the client’s present belief systems. Life coaches examine the past insofar as is needed to de-program old limiting beliefs so that the client can thrive – both now and in the future.

An analogy I use with my clients is this: Clinical Psychotherapy for a severe issue is akin to taking a specific medicine for a specific illness if you’re really unwell; Life Coaching, on the other hand, is akin to taking your vitamins, eating healthily, getting enough sleep, and ensuring you’re getting enough exercise so that you can live your best life. You can choose to ignore these things, and you’ll “stay alive” … but without these pillars of a healthy lifestyle you won’t be functioning OPTIMALLY.

Life coaching is perfect for people who want to learn how to move from feeling like they’re just surviving and into a place of THRIVING!

What is the point of Life Coaching?

In a word? Coaching helps clients to THRIVE.

Life coaching helps you to identify the gaps between where you are and where you want to be, and helps you to bridge those gaps to bring about significant and permanent change.

Life Coaching is very empowering and leaves clients feeling motivated, inspired, renewed, and full of self-love and self-confidence as though they can take on the world.

Life Coaching, in short, is about helping you to move from feeling like you are just surviving to truly living your life by design and on purpose. It’s about THRIVING.

Who is Life Coaching for?

Life coaching might be a good fit for you if you’re dealing with:

➨ Feeling ‘stuck’ or lost
➨ Low self-worth (not feeling good enough)
➨ A lack of self-esteem/ self-love
➨ Low self-confidence
➨ Self-doubt (feeling self-conscious)
➨ Negative self-talk
➨ Imposter syndrome
➨ People pleasing
➨ Tendencies towards perfectionism
➨ General life dissatisfaction
➨ A mid-life crisis
➨ Mild depression/ mild anxiety
➨ Weight you can’t seem to shift
➨ Fear of getting back into the dating world
➨ Loneliness or difficulty making friends
➨ Relationship issues
➨ Constantly comparing yourself to others

You may feel stuck, bored, lost, lonely, burnt out, highly critical of yourself, unmotivated, or you may be at a crossroads in your life and don’t know how to move from point A to point B. You may wonder, “how can I be happier? What do other people know that I don’t?”

Clients often come to me when they’ve tried traditional therapy, but didn’t feel like they were ‘damaged’ enough to warrant therapy in a clinical setting. They intuitively know they need more than a DIY self-help book, but they haven’t figured out what they DO need. They want to feel better about themselves, and they seek clarity of purpose, personal fulfilment, and freedom from negative self-talk.

Clients who come to see me may present with emotional issues such as low self-esteem, but they are largely mentally healthy, functioning individuals; rather than dealing with complex abuse or trauma issues, clients tend to be just generally dissatisfied with one or more areas of their lives.

You may not even know what’s “wrong”… just that you don’t feel “right.” You may feel like you’re just existing and lack true purpose or direction.

What happens in a life coaching session?

Let me put your mind at ease.

Coaching is not about laying on a sofa in a sterile, clinical environment. The coaching relationship is collaborative, with a shared goal of helping you get from where you are now (stuck) to where you want to be (thriving!)

➨ It isn’t necessary in the slightest for you to know why you feel the way you feel. The only thing you need to have is a sense of curiosity, an open mind, and a desire to feel better.
➨ You don’t need to have prepared anything. That’s where I come in!
➨ You just get to come as you are, and I will guide the session to ensure you derive massive value from it.

A coaching session involves a comfortable conversation, almost like you’re having an inspiring chat with a good friend, except with LOADS of “aha” moments and the added benefit that I am not putting judgements on you or your situation.

A masterful life coach should always set up a safe environment where you can think about big questions without feeling pressured or judged.

During your session, I’ll ask some deep and thought-provoking questions, and together we’ll put a lens on what’s working, what’s not working, and how you can move from surviving to thriving.

I’ll help you to identify the gaps between where you are and where you want to be, and then help you to figure out how to bridge that gap.

So … why not just have a chat with a friend?

Putting it bluntly, friendship is about give and take; as an impartial professional, I make it all about YOU, your goals, your development, and getting you results and a real transformation.

Coaching teaches you self-awareness – the most valuable tool you have to improve your life.

Through powerful questioning and insightful exercises, and by teaching you empowering tools and techniques, I’ll help you to clear away old wounding and unconscious programming. I can coach you through a goal you’d like to accomplish (big or small!) or an obstacle you might be dealing with, or simply assist you in getting “unstuck” by helping you to finally get out of your own way!

(Psst! If you book a coaching package with me, you will get your very own SUPER USEFUL deLush Transformation Makeover System™ binder with personalised worksheets, useful exercises, and helpful notes that you can refer back to again and again whenever you need a ‘tune up.’)

Private life coaching sessions in Exeter

You wouldn’t want to do a yoga retreat in a dank, concrete warehouse, would you?

Clients who book a life coaching session will be taken to the consulting room - a beautiful space designed to support you in your transformational journey.

The style of the room is intended to help you to unwind and dispel any nerves, so that we can quickly get to the root of what has been holding you back.

How are payments processed?

All payments are processed via Stripe. Stripe Payments is an online payment processing platform. Millions of businesses of all sizes – from startups to large enterprises – use Stripe's software and APIs to accept payments and manage their businesses online.

Stripe powers the transactions of some of the biggest brands out there, including Lyft, Made.com, ASOS, Deliveroo, and Pinterest. (In fact, the company claims that 89% of all credit cards have been processed on a Stripe network at some point!).

Stripe is certified to the highest industry standards and has obtained regulatory licences around the world, meaning your payment is totally secure.

Why do I have to pay in advance?

For all services, full payment in advance of the initial session or block of sessions is required. I’ve implemented a ‘pay in advance’ system because after nearly 15 years in business, I find that the entire process goes most smoothly when clients pay in advance; it’s faster and easier for the client, and it eliminates the need for me to chase payments whilst reducing the likelihood of ‘no shows.’

Please note that a date cannot be secured without payment in advance, though I will tentatively hold a date for x1 business day for payment to be made.

After establishing an ongoing relationship, a payment plan or alternative method can be arranged for subsequent sessions if desired.
